The best dangerous cost for ‘free’ Wi-Fi

Whether it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

So you go to a political tradition. Do a little politicking and listen to some speeches. While taking a break from the handshaking and schmoozing you choose to do a little work on your laptop. Then you get hacked.

During the Conservative National Convention, IT security company Avast security established up fake Wi-Fi hotspots to see who would fall for their trick. As it works out, a lot of men and women fell for it. Avast estimated more than 1, 200 people logged into the fake hotspots, some with politically inclined names like "I ELECTION TRUMP! FREE INTERNET, " and "I VOTE HILLARY! FREE INTERNET, " and some with an official engagement ring with them like "Google Starbucks" and ATTWifi at GOP. "

Of those, sixty-eight. 3 percent exposed their identities.

This may not a new trick for actual hackers, but a popular one in travel friendly spots, or big events. The Democratic National Convention and Olympics are expected to be breeding grounds for fraud.

"There are so many free applications and hardware devices available that almost anyone can do it, " said Jerry Irvine, member of the Oughout. S. Chamber of Commerce's Cybersecurity Leadership Council and CIO of Prescient Solutions.
We're suckers

The relieve of developing a fake killer spot is one reason hacker keep doing it. "There are freely available tools that allow someone to easily turn their laptop into a Wi-Fi killer spot, " said says Whilst gary Davis, chief consumer security evangelist for Intel Security.

Another is that we keep falling for it. "There are so many free public Wi-Fi locations that users have become too comfortable joining them, " says Irvine.
wi fi blocking wifi

It's become such a part of our daily lives--especially if we travel and are always looking for free Wi-Fi--that we don't always question that any community, especially one with a name related to a specific event, is there for just about any other reason than to make our lives more convenient. Time is a factor, too--and that we do not think we have enough of it to check on, particularly if we're trying to login before going on to a zillion other things. "We are always in a rush and often don't take the time to consider if a Wi-Fi is malicious or fake. All of us tend to click the top free link, " claims Davis.

A new and potent Android Trojan has already been leaked on several subway forums, so that it is available for free to less practical cybercriminals who are now likely to utilize it in attacks.

The Trojan application is known as SpyNote and allows hackers to steal users' messages and contacts, listen in on the calls, document sound using the device's built-in microphone, control the device camera, make rogue calls and more.

Based on researchers from Palo Enorme Networks, SpyNote does not require root access to a device, but really does prompt users for a long set of permissions on installation. The Trojan can also update itself and install other rogue programs on the device.

Is actually not clear yet how attackers plan to distribute it to victims, because experts haven't observed attacks in the wild using it. However, they think that such attacks are extremely likely providing that the SpyNote constructor is now available for free.

The builder is a Windows application that can be used to build custom-made versions of the malicious SpyNote APK (Android application package). Attackers can modify parameters like the app's name, icon and order server.

Most malicious Android applications are distributed from third-party websites and require devices to allow the installation of programs from "unknown sources. " This particular feature is deterred on Android devices automatically.

Coming from time to time, adware and spyware also slips through Google's defenses besides making its way to the state Play Retail store.

Another probability is guide installation of the Trojan's iphone app on an unsupervised device, for example by way of a jealous spouse, a business partner, or an ill-intended colleague. There have been cases where users have received pre-infected devices as gifts from people who wished to spy on them.

Newer versions of Android have antimalware features like Verify Apps and SafetyNet that can identify and block known adware and spyware applications when their unit installation is attempted and even if "unknown sources" is allowed on the device.

As a general principle, "installing applications from thirdparty sources can be extremely risky -- those sources often shortage the governance provided by official sources including the Google Play Store, which, even with detailed procedures and algorithms to disregard destructive applications, is not impregnable, " the Palo Enorme Networks researchers said in a blog post. "Side-loading programs from questionable resources exposes users and their mobile devices to a variety of malware and possible data loss. "

Following delays, Lenovo finally delivers its first OLED laptop

Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Yoga with an OLED screen and Intel Core i5 Skylake processor starts at $1, 682.

After months of delays, Lenovo's first laptop with an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen is now shipping and delivery, but it's unclear whether the PC maker will bring out additional OLED models anytime soon.

The particular ThinkPad X1 Yoga with a 14-inch OLED display screen is now shipping for US$1, 682, which is a premium price in contrast to the same model with a conventional BROUGHT screen, costing $1, 394. Both laptops have Intel Core i5 Skylake processors.

The laptop has got the greatest OLED screen available. HP's Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop and Dell's Alienware 13 gaming laptop have 13. 3-inch OLED screens.

Such as in TVs, OLED monitors are eventually expected to replace LED screens in laptops and monitors, though that may take years. OLEDs are thinner, render crisper images, and are more power efficient, which makes them better for laptops.

But only a few PC manufacturers have shown interest in OLEDs. The displays are expensive and have problems like image burn-in that still need to be resolved.

All laptops with OLEDs were delayed due to supply and testing issues with the screens. Show makers Samsung and LG ELECTRONICS are making a minimal number of OLED sections for PCs and are focusing more on OLEDs for large-screen TVs and small-screen devices like wearables, which sell in greater volumes.

As a outcome, PC makers that once showed strong excitement for OLEDs are actually stepping back again. HP, for one, has said it will limit OLED to premium models and wait for the technology, supply, and pricing to stabilize before bringing the technology to lower-priced laptops.

There's also a catch with the ThinkPad X1 Yoga OLED model -- you can't get WiGig Wi-Fi, which is available in the LED models.

The particular ThinkPad has a revolving touch screen that can display images at a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution. The laptop weighs 1 . 2 kilograms and is 17 millimeters thick. That offers around 11 hrs of battery life, according to Lenovo.

Other features in the entry-level model include a 128GB solid-state drive, 8GB of RAM, and dual-band Wi-Fi. The laptop also has a 720p webcam, three USB 3. 0 ports, a micro-SD slot, a Mini-DisplayPort, and HDMI display slots.

When you order a laptop today, it will eventually ship in three to four days.
